I’m going to pull an Ophelia Benson and just do a block text dump, add a line or two and pretend I’m a huge intellectual.

Loading the Language

The language of the totalist environment is characterized by the thought-terminating cliche. The most far-reaching and complex of human problems are compressed into brief, highly reductive, definitive-sounding phrases, easily memorized and easily expressed. These become the start and finish of any ideological analysis. In thought reform, for instance, the phrase “bourgeois mentality” is used to encompass and critically dismiss ordinarily troublesome concerns like the quest for individual expression, the exploration of alternative ideas, and the search for perspective and balance in political judgments. And in addition to their function as interpretive shortcuts, these cliches become what Richard Weaver has called “ultimate terms”: either “god terms,” representative of ultimate good; or “devil terms,” representative of ultimate evil. In thought reform, “progress,” “progressive,” “liberation,” “proletarian standpoints” and “the dialectic of history” fall into the former category; “capitalist,” “imperialist,” “exploiting classes,” and “bourgeois” (mentality, liberalism, morality, superstition, greed) of course fall into the latter. Totalist language, then, is repetitiously centered on all-encompassing jargon, prematurely abstract, highly categorical, relentlessly judging, and to anyone but its most devoted advocate, deadly dull: in Lionel Trilling’s phrase, “the language of nonthought.” (more…)

Quantifying the incidence of gratuitous snarl and fear/pity language on Butterflies & Wheels

-= ABSTRACT =-

Westernised professional wailing (唱板板, or “singing the banban”1) as a career and lifestyle choice is one of the most challenging, yet least known, branches of the classical performing arts. It distinguishes itself from its eastern roots – that of professional mourners hired for funerals as public showing of the social status of the deceased – by being far more entrepre’neurial and a business model in its own right. It is a complex, multidisciplinary form of expression that distills the finer subtleties from Munchausen Syndrome and certain aspects of HPD into its own unique brand psychodramatic theatre. Notable laureates of this school have been Glenn Beck, Anita Bryant, Joseph McCarthy, Jenny McCarthy (no relation), Catharine MacKinnon and Fred Phelps – those that have taken the mundane, the nonsensical and the nonexistant and, through applied hyperbole, hysteria and robotic repetition of fear-mongering and artificial “us and them” division, have escalated non-problems to the status of cancers that threaten to undermine society itself, thus ensnaring and captivating an audience of the feeble and the powerless that are incapable of articulating their bottled up angst unassisted. As with all styles of thespian expression, language is the primary tool and here the language of demonisation and persecution is the key to establishing a stage presence and an unforgettable persona in the eyes of the target audience. Yet this language is too seldom analysed, let alone quantified. This paper attempts to enumerate the frequency with which the language of demonisation and persecution occurs in one particular contemporary ideological ghetto – that of the collective that has formed around freefromthoughtblogs, Skepchick and it’s mutant offspring Atheism+.

Now one handy graphic –

Clarification – not all people seem to “get” the point of this graphic due to not having been exposed to freefromthoughtblogs idiocy long enough. The citation needed! squawk is a stock standard get out of jail card used by baboons when cornered on some kind of vileness they know they can’t defend. Usually, it is about something that has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt a 100 times previously (e.g. Watson’s calls to boycott Dawkins; her vandalism and subsequent ban from randi.org) and some new commentor points it out, without also including all of the evidence from scratch – the response is Pavlovian: Citation needed!

In many ways, this is the FfTB equivalent of the Creationist’s squawk of “but what about the gaps!”

Paraphrasing Orwell in the light of Freethoughtblogs

“Criticism is ‘silencing’, you know. Banning, though, is just maintaining ‘safe space’.”

“It is churchy. It’s the kind of behaviour that made me give up religion in the first place.”  ‘tardbook friends comments. To FfTB’s horror, they’re female, and worse, don’t think I’m a monster.

“Where do you find these fanatics that most atheists don’t give a damn about?”

“Just saw this article at The Crisis Factory. You called it over a year ago. New, New Atheism.” — and the obligatory males have to stick stick their dicks in.

Though many will deny it, there is no such thing as a person that does not get a smug satisfaction rush out of the simple act of saying “I told you so…”

Yes, I called new, new atheism, but it was well over a year ago. At my best estimate, I was sounding the warning bells as far back as 20081. It was only here, over the last year, that I have started pushing the point that the rabble that now hogs the public spaces of the godless have little, if nothing, in common with the in-your-face, out-of-the-closet new atheism pioneered by what has come to be known as the Four Horsemen – Dawkins, Dennet, Harris and the late, dearly missed Hitchens. “If you’re a preacher, you talk for a living, so even if you don’t make sense, you learn to make nonsense eloquently.Andrew Young [link]

“It is a far, far better thing to have a firm anchor in nonsense than to put out on the troubled seas of thought.” John Kenneth Galbraith [link]

These two quotes sit nicely side by side. The Galbraith one is particularly juicy, and richly sardonic, taken from his early work, The Affluent Society and refers to his theory of The Dependence Effect in economics which can be summarised roughly as –

…the final focus on production in economics amongst all else; alongside the observation that maximisation of production is sought chiefly not for the goods it produces, but to obtain full employment. The Dependence Effect further undermines our focus on production, claiming that the demand for this new production is created by the production itself(more…)

Just to make the spurious complainer’s job a little harder… It’s now my domain. If you have a problem with content, tell me, because I care.

To commemorate, here’s an old Loony Tunes clip that just cracks me up every time and summarises the state of affairs in the noisier segments of what passes for online “secularism” at this point in time.

Spike is the dominant baboon Pharyngudrone PZ Myers / Rebecca Watson protege, Chester is a baboon wannabe, Sylvester is the archetypical misogynist, his response is how they perceive their impact on them and the door, well that’s what happens every time the baboons bignote themselves. Enjoy.

Usually, when you talk about the intellectual incoherence of Watsonistas to those that are unfamiliar with the Borg-like horde, they are naturally skeptical and are prone to assume you exaggerate.

I wish it were true. But it’s not. Yes they are that incoherent. No, you are not likely to find any kind of relevant argument in any of their babbling. No, they are not really indistinguishable from one another either. Yes they are legion and yes, they have frequent flyers that throw regular flouncy fits after a final parting insult, swearing never to return, only to be back a few days later regurgitating the same gibberish.

So for the unbelievers, I have collated ~3 months worth of Watsonista commentary deposited right here, discarding only the completely incomprehensible mouth-full-of-baked-beans-sneeze type gibberish (which is all still here if you really want to look for it). (more…)

Which one’s MacKinnon?

Oh how cute – one of the “I really really hate Rebecca Watson” crowd has made a fake Twitter account in order to do a lot of stupid self-implicating tweets as if by Rebecca. Oh haha that’s so funny – what’s next, emptying a pail of garbage in her bed? Locking a skunk in her bathroom? Putting a bomb under her car?

— Our Ophelia, Brevity is the soul of wit

You have to love it. “Freethought”blogs in action. Continuing a proud tradition of cherry-picking and confirmation bias as evidence for truth, Ophelia has blundered onto another nugget of nothing and seizes on it, without any hesitation or any inclination to research it, and immediately exploits it to full strategic advantage. And excess, by conflating criticism of poor innocent Becky Watson with car bombing while she’s at it. No slander is too vile.

Quite unlike those horrid assholes at ERV that she despises with her whole vagina – who similarly saw this item and dismissed it as juvenile, copycat 4channery – Ophelia immediately grasps it uncritically with both fists and declares it evidence because it tells her what she wants to hear – that her suspicions are valid and her assumptions, as always, are right. Hammer.Nail.Head.

Once again, Justicar (with the aid of the usual haters and rapists at ERV of course) is as sharp as a tack and picks up on some new nonsense in an already nonsensical piece of earlier slave wallowing from The Naked Emperor.

This is just so precious. When an actual geneticist pops into the baboon board, humbly and without fanfare or announcing he is such, and gets torn apart and branded a liar and a moron for his use of the term phenotype, it is funny –

Sally @432:

Donkane is a cowardly liar. Feel free to come back and prove me wrong, Donkane. Yes of course, all those research grants. Busy busy now! And those BIG BIG words! “Phenotype,” golly, what a smart cookie you are!

When that geneticist is Dr Donald A. Kane and is also, by all accounts, one of the folks that has some kind of hand on the purse strings1 to much of the Baboon King’s funding, it becomes priceless. (more…)
