social sites

My first alarm bells about what I term new, new atheism began going off several years ago when the phenomenon of atheist social sites began surging in popularity.

Belief may be the death of intellect for the armchair philosopher, but for the realist, it is popularity, and populism, that does the real damage. And having experienced the heartbreak of watching some of these sites from point of inception, where they were amazing hotbeds of dissident discourse amongst some of the brightest on the ‘net, slowly degrade, as the masses arrived, into a toxic miasma of faux moralism, ideological axe grinding, Gollum inspired “don’t be a dick” censorship and witch hunting, it is difficult to not succumb to despair.

Figureheads which should have acted with integrity and shown clear leadership to maintain intellectual and ethical standards instead succumbed to the lure of chasing ratings and audience numbers at any cost. So hope got drowned in a bucket and what we ended up with instead was a bunch of godless Oprah Winfrey shows. (more…)

Roseanne Barr gets swept away by Wagner

OK, let’s talk about hatred shall we?

The Watsonistas certainly do. Relentlessly. In fact, if you take their word for it, outside of Saudi Arabia, the greatest concentration of misogynists and rape apologists on Earth can be found within the atheist and skeptic communities and a woman that attends any of their events and escapes without being sexually assaulted is in a rare minority (and probably a traitor and collaborator).

Perhaps the Watsonista that most openly, honestly and unambiguously expresses the true sentiments of all involved is Skeptifem. While others go to great lengths to disguise their hatreds as concerns, she has no such inhibitions and just lets her venom drip. A great display can be seen in an extended rant against male-friendly women, appropriately titled inside the mind of a gender traitor. It is worth reading this extract with care as there is an unusual observation to be made – (more…)

She’s in control. And chances are, she hates you.

Love you V. Just don’t breathe on me.

It is nice that when you are on the verge of abandoning all hope in what now passes for the “rationalist” internet, something new pops up out of the blue to restore it.

That’s the kind of feeling I got when I stumbled into Science 2.0 recently – yes there are kindred spirits still out there that still do place value on reality, have a healthy, unashamed contempt for typhos, and don’t allow themselves to be held hostage by ideological maniacs. Just as a quick thumbnail example of civilisation, compare Pharyngula’s self-proclaimed style of notoriously ruthless commentariat to what is fairly typical at Science 2.0. It’s really the difference between cannibal tribesmen that throw virgins into volcanoes and the modern cosmopolite in his or her library with a snifter of cognac. (more…)

Flounce

When a member of an online community announces they are leaving, usually after a protracted disagreement with other members of the community.

“I’m gone. You all enjoy your little discussions.”

This definition really needs to be expanded to include the serial flounce or the flounce yo-yo, those that rejoin communities after a melodramatic exit, usually with much pomp and grandiosity, only to leave again ad nauseam. And with guilt laid on with a trowel.

At the core of this dumbness is a basic reality – some folks should just leave the internet alone, for all our sakes, but especially their own. The old maxim is as valid is everif you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. To venture into any online community with the assumption that you will never receive criticism, and even occasional abuse, is beyond simply naive – it is fragile Pollyannaism. Especially when you spend significant amounts of time criticising others whilst perched precariously on a self-constructed moral high ground. It courts psychological disaster. (more…)
