It’s paranoid time

Interesting week. The American public is shocked, SHOCKED, to discover it is living in a surveillance state. For some of us, who have been warning of this scenario unfolding over the last decade or so, the most difficult thing right now is to resist extracting cheap satisfaction by admonishing with “we told you so!”

We told you about Carnivore and ECHELON. We told you about Total Information Awareness (TIA). We told you about the secret rooms housing Narus network tap and DPI racks being quietly installed at core points of the US communications backbone at AT&T and others. We told you about the massive data centre the NSA was building in Utah. You dismissed us as cranks and paranoids – and resumed posting your Lolcats and gossiping about mindless crap, because, y’know, that’s what morons do.

Now all of this has coagulated into this amorphous thing being labelled Prism. (more…)

There are no good pics… [image from Sydney Morning Herald]

[From the “the more things change, the more they stay the same” files.]

The time was 1994 and, downunder at least, it was when the last great wave of gender feminist lunacy was peaking before sanity once more prevailed and it disappeared back up its own asshole to hibernate for a decade or so.

Reclaim the Night rallies were still drawing enough numbers to embolden some to splash porn stores with red paint and the great fear-n-loathing du jour was date rape…

The mood of the time, and the surreal deformation of conventional reality that accompanied it, was captured quite creepily in this passage from Christina Hoff Sommers in Who Stole Feminism?(more…)

Adria, could you please explain what the t-shirt means?

Not a lot I can say about this that hasn’t been said elsewhere, and frankly, it’s not my horse race anyway. Yet another example of gender fem-bot Jacobinism rearing it’s ugly head – the godless and the gamers are far from the only ones under siege. I’ll leave the concise summary to ArsTechnica –

“Donglegate” is classic overreaction—and everyone pays

Adria Richard’s (her site looks like it’s currently being DDoS’ed) version –

Forking and Dongle Jokes Don’t Belong At Tech Conferences

I would have let this idiocy slide and left it to the propeller heads but for one item in the commentary on Richard’s piece – (more…)

I am told that one of these images is funny and the other is not…

It kept us sane.

I grew up with MaximumRockNRoll. Whilst far too often wallowing in identity politic nihilism, it was a priceless resource for alt.culture in the pre-internet stone age. It kept many of us sane, providing endless resources to other folks like us cruelly separated by the tyranny of distance. The premier issue was July 1982 – which makes us scumfucs that remember pushing 50 and beyond. The age that we used to hate with a fearsome passion.

Central to MRR’s appeal was knowing you were not alone. That there were others on the planet that held the same contempt for what passed as pop culture of the time. For me personally, rock bottom was reached here, also in 1982 – ABC and Look of Love [masochists can click here]. I cannot articulate the despair that was evoked by this nothingness that was everywhere – every music teevee show, every commercial radio channel, every shopping mall, pub and club. Noxious, spotty teenagers pumping dimes in jukeboxes playing the same non-music, bubblegum garbage everywhere. There was no escape. But there was MRR – and it was a lifeline.

The most wonderful feature of MRR, and similar zines such as Metal Forces for the headbangers, was the personals section where folks would post real addresses for correspondence and, most importantly, cassette tape trading of music – very much the Napster of its day. (more…)

[Apologies for a rather dry digression devoid meanie-poo-pants images (OK, there’s one), but this needed to be done. I assembled this document for one of the myriad of groups that has formed in order to resist this newly branded old idiocy from the same subnormals that brought you Elevatorgate. These suggestions are all quite serious and there’s a massive body count of folks out there that show what happens without them. Distribute this freely.]

Preliminary Considerations

If you are capturing data about, or wanting to engage with, any of these groups, it is important to abandon all optimism and basic goodwill you would afford to regular human beings in your day-to-day interactions. It is important to consider that many, though not all, of the people involved are –

  • habitual liars that modify reality to suit on a daily basis
  • subject to Myers’ Law – https://greylining.com/2011/12/01/myers-law/ – where, most simply put, anything you communicate will be misinterpreted and used against you by any means possible
  • vicious, amoral sociopaths that CAN and WILL seek to harm you, your family or your friends personally and professionally by any means available. They have no capacity for civilized response to either criticism or satire and this is usually the only way they know how to respond

In general, especially when you are dealing with PZ Myers or his inner circle directly, it is a good rule of thumb to imagine the worst possible consequences of your actions – and then expect twice that in return. (more…)
