Yesterday’s derangement did find a climax eventually -

Continuing Butterflies & Wheels babble

Not entirely sure what this is supposed to achieve. I think it’s supposed to be some fatal coup de grâce or something. It certainly takes the surreality to a new level. Alleged “freethinkers” so petty and spiteful, and so cocksure of their importance in the scheme of things, that they have a sincere belief that this kind of idiot Moral Majority style of reaction will achieve something other than making themselves look even more stupid. “If you’re a preacher, you talk for a living, so even if you don’t make sense, you learn to make nonsense eloquently.Andrew Young [link]

“It is a far, far better thing to have a firm anchor in nonsense than to put out on the troubled seas of thought.” John Kenneth Galbraith [link]

These two quotes sit nicely side by side. The Galbraith one is particularly juicy, and richly sardonic, taken from his early work, The Affluent Society and refers to his theory of The Dependence Effect in economics which can be summarised roughly as -

…the final focus on production in economics amongst all else; alongside the observation that maximisation of production is sought chiefly not for the goods it produces, but to obtain full employment. The Dependence Effect further undermines our focus on production, claiming that the demand for this new production is created by the production itself(more…)

Usually, when you talk about the intellectual incoherence of Watsonistas to those that are unfamiliar with the Borg-like horde, they are naturally skeptical and are prone to assume you exaggerate.

I wish it were true. But it’s not. Yes they are that incoherent. No, you are not likely to find any kind of relevant argument in any of their babbling. No, they are not really indistinguishable from one another either. Yes they are legion and yes, they have frequent flyers that throw regular flouncy fits after a final parting insult, swearing never to return, only to be back a few days later regurgitating the same gibberish.

So for the unbelievers, I have collated ~3 months worth of Watsonista commentary deposited right here, discarding only the completely incomprehensible mouth-full-of-baked-beans-sneeze type gibberish (which is all still here if you really want to look for it). (more…)

Which one's MacKinnon?

Oh how cute – one of the “I really really hate Rebecca Watson” crowd has made a fake Twitter account in order to do a lot of stupid self-implicating tweets as if by Rebecca. Oh haha that’s so funny – what’s next, emptying a pail of garbage in her bed? Locking a skunk in her bathroom? Putting a bomb under her car?

– Our Ophelia, Brevity is the soul of wit

You have to love it. “Freethought”blogs in action. Continuing a proud tradition of cherry-picking and confirmation bias as evidence for truth, Ophelia has blundered onto another nugget of nothing and seizes on it, without any hesitation or any inclination to research it, and immediately exploits it to full strategic advantage. And excess, by conflating criticism of poor innocent Becky Watson with car bombing while she’s at it. No slander is too vile.

Quite unlike those horrid assholes at ERV that she despises with her whole vagina – who similarly saw this item and dismissed it as juvenile, copycat 4channery – Ophelia immediately grasps it uncritically with both fists and declares it evidence because it tells her what she wants to hear – that her suspicions are valid and her assumptions, as always, are right. The Watsonista spiritual mentor

I wrote this in an earlier post, but did not expand -

It reminds me of an observation made by Peter Sloterdijk in his Critique of Cynical Reason -

“The violent, antirationalistic impulse in Western countries is reacting to an intellectual state of affairs in which all thinking has become strategy

This is what we are seeing here – all language and communication reduced to strategy. This is the precursor to all communication is propaganda, or more simply, when communication itself, a two way transfer of unfiltered information1, ceases.

This nonsense dissection of language has nothing to do with discourse or exchange of ideas, and everything to do with finding strategic advantage.

What you say is not relevant. How what you say can be reframed for advantage is.

Communication is reduced to propaganda. It ceases to be communication with any value. (more…)

I must say this is disheartening. When otherwise fairly clear minds succumb to the pressure of “maybe you overstepped the mark” when they spend more time than they should reflecting on their own actions, rather than the realities that led up to those actions.

It is one thing entirely to apologise to yourself by saying “I should be above that” for uttering a thoughtless flippancy. It is quite another to then guilt yourself out and apologise to the target, when that target has displayed nothing other than capricious malice in their behaviour, has personally shame targeted you and been a disruptive nuisance in your real life circle of existence. To glibly pop out that you are glad to see the back of them – on Twitter of all things – is hardly grounds for mortification and penance.

It is a testament to the weight of the leaden blanket of guilt that the Watsonistas suffocate the community with, with their catastrophised hyperboles of oppression and martyr’s suffering at the jackbooted heels of the concocted demons that persecute them. It works and they are encouraged by the success of the strategy to keep building on the mythology of victimisation to make it all work better next time. In business language, this is called continuous improvement. (more…)

Becky's other outfit

“These are people who desperately want to insult me, but have neither the wit nor the intelligence to do it properly.”Our Becky

Ouch. I don’t know how I can ever recover my dignity.

It’s that time again, when Becky has been caught red-handed doing something stupid and/or gratuitously self-serving and/or criminal and knowing full well that there is no way to back-peddle, deny or squirm her way out of it, Becky falls back on her reliable triple-play of trivialisation, distraction and playing the victim card about being bullied by the misogynist conspiracy – with the usual quote mining, context abuse, disregard for reality and outright deception.

Becky takes exception to my calling her “dumber than dogshit” (and a shopping list of other crimes I’ll return to later) over her latest boot-in-mouth numbskullery in proclaiming to the world, with a very sincere face, that the church executed Galileo. Evidently it’s just a twee boo-boo that should just be overlooked, especially when its from such an eminent and universally admired intellectual as herself, and that it’s all being blown out of proportion by nasty and jealous assholes. Replay of a replay of a replay. (more…)

You think you can’t see anything new from the Watsonistas that can appall you any more than you already feel, but they are the gift that keeps on giving. USA Today decides to feed more oxygen to the psychopath and the toilet slave (aka Becky and The Naked Emperor) in an article you’re probably best off avoiding unless you are feeling absolutely serene, in control and relaxed; and then only if you are happy to have your entire day ruined. Otherwise, you will seriously want to throw your ‘puter across the room.

The article is beyond merely appalling or deliberate propaganda manipulation, though it is both. You have to wonder where to lay the blame for this psychedelic nonsense – at least part of the fault has to lie with the author Kimberly Winston1 who is not very likely to have either sympathy or empathy with godlessness, and, whether consciously or not, her negative skewing of the article manages to find an excess that the Gruesome Twosome would never have been able to manage on their own. From the very first line, you know you are on a roller coaster in the opposite direction from anything that even remotely reflects reality -

Atheists address sexism issues (more…)

Imagine – if you can – not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern for the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken.

And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools.

Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless.

You are not held back from any of your desires by guilt or shame, and you are never confronted by others for your cold-bloodedness. The ice water in your veins is so bizarre, so completely outside of their personal experience, that they seldom even guess at your condition. (more…)

Skepchicks International

Monday, November 21, 2005

No, this isn’t a sexist post on my part. There really is a group of women who call themselves Skepchics, Intl., and they are really cool. The word “chick” is demeaning, of course, only if used by a man (and even then, it depends on the context), and these women are most certainly not into politically correct nonsense [...] (more…)
